Choosing Anchor Text For Your Internal Links

Internal page links are an area over which you have complete control yet many people don't pay enough attention to them. You have the greatest control over links from within your own web site so take advantage of that control. Sometimes it is hard to control how others link to you, but you can always do a good job of providing great links to yourself using internal site linking.

Here are some rules to follow when creating your Internal Page Links.

Make sure that the anchor text for you link is relevant to your target page

Whenever it is possible use words similar to those expressed in the title of the target article or page you are linking to. Make sure the anchor text is relevant and that the link title and the title of the article, post or page match the main keywords of the target page. Having a few of those ubiquitous "click here" links scattered around might make you look a bit more natural, but for the most part your links should describe what is on the other end of the link. For example if I wanted to link to one of my previous posts about Transforming Your Blog By Changing Yourself I could type in a link that looks like this.

Read my post Practice - Transforming Your Blog By Changing Yourself - Part 1 here.

It would be more profitable and productive however to use the title of
the post which includes good keywords as the anchor text for the link. Here is
the way it should be done.

Read my post Practice - Transforming Your Blog By Changing Yourself - Part 1.
This type of linking has a large impact on how you will rank for keywords. The more you link internally using specific keywords and to relevant content the higher you will rank for those keywords.

Use the title tag and use the main keywords from the target page

The title tag in a link is not as important as the anchor text, but many search engines still place quite a bit of weight on it. You can also make up a bit for a not-so-hot anchor text with good title keywords.

Example:
<a href="http://profitableproductiveblogging.com/"
title="Profitable Productive Blogging - Make Money Online With Cman"> Profitable Productive Blogging</a>
Internal linking when done right will not only boost your standing for your keywords but also will encourage people to continue reading other content on your site. When posting on a topic that you have posted on in the past you should always include link(s) back to your previous posts. When people start clicking links on your site they move from being simple readers to being actively engaged in your sites content.

Black Friday, Free Cell Phones, And Making Money

Okay well I would assume that by now you have probably come across a Black Friday ad online somewhere. There are entire sites devoted year 'round to just that one day. Stores purposefully leak the ads to build buzz. People get in line at midnight, or earlier in some cases, just to get that TV, Computer, or toy for their kid.

A lot of brick-and-mortar stores have started extending the Black Friday sales to their online stores as well. The online store runs the sale the same hours as the in-store sale and with many offering free site-to-store shipping this is fast becoming the way to go for many consumers. I know for me I have pretty much quit going out on Black Friday. I never, well once about 10 years ago, gotten what I really wanted and wasted my day trying to get. I would just get frustrated and stressed and end up wasting the day anyway. So now I do the online shopping thing, or I convince some poor gullible soul to go out for me :).

Well I wanted to make my contribution to the Black Friday hysteria and let you know you can get a free cell phone on Black Friday and you will never have to leave the comfort of your own home. You can check out great deals from all the major carriers including some really good Verizon Wireless Black Friday ads.

Are you looking for the iPhone? Come on...With the iPhone now the number one cell phone ever I'm sure your spouse or kid has been bugging you for one. Now granted you won't get the iPhone for free but you can get some other great at&t Black Friday specials. Hey let me tell you I have the iPhone and ATT service and the phone is the best phone I have ever had, and the ATT coverage is really good. Combine that with the best 3G coverage and you have a winner.

Don't like ATT? Then what about checking out some TMobile Black Friday ads. TMobile is a great carrier with a ton of free phones and other great Black Friday deals. I've never had TMobile, but I have some friends that do and they are extremely happy. Now if for some weird reason :) you like Sprint/Nextel they are also running some Black Friday deals. I personally have never like Sprint or Nextel, but I do know some construction guys that like Nextel, although they seem to be the only ones. Anyway if you go the Sprint route you can find some pretty decent Sprint Black Friday specials and make someone sorta happy with their phone :) this Christmas.

Well if you are the type of person that goes out and braves the crowds to get that great deal I wish you the best. If you, like me, like to shop from the comfort of your couch click on a few of the links above, get your free phone, and save your sanity :)....Until next time....

Are We Too Connected?

I have asked myself, and others, this question many times. It all started with the answering machine. Then we had emails, mobile phones, and now mobile phones with emails. We now have Twitter, which I have yet to embrace. It isn't that I don't see how it could benefit this blog, but simply put I don't give a da-- that you are sitting in starbuck's reading a book. I don't figure you give a da-- that I am either. I understand Twitter goes beyond that, but you get the point.

So we have people running around with their iPhones and Crackberries worried they are missing emails, phonecalls, and text messages. They are doing this while listening to music and Twittering away. With all of the social networking apps for the new smart phones, I have to admit I do love my iPhone, they are probably running an app that allows them to geotag the picture they just took, just before playing live poker and chatting with other players....

We all need to just unplug, turn off, disconnect, and chill out. What do you think? Are we just a bit toooo connected? Do we let all of these so called time savers actually suck up our time responding to and posting useless bits of information? You should read the The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Timothy Ferris and see how he handles his time. You might like what you read...also below is another perspective...enjoy

Save Money & Blog Better

Guest Article and video by Brett Bumeter of Benspark dot com. Stop over and check out his blog about photography. A big thanks to Brett for this article. I have been talking about an application over the last several weeks called Dragon NaturallySpeaking. With this great program you can knock out a blog article in literally less than half the time. I love it. The price for 25% off Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard is very reasonable and with the coupon code below you can save 25%.

With 25% off Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred you can even transcribe from mp3s. I love this option because I can blog while driving. I record what I want to say on my iPhone and then load the audio into the program and viola first draft of an article.

Nuance is allowing us to offer our readers a 25% Discount Coupon CODE Exclusive for Dragon Naturally Speaking, but you must click the image below and use this code DNSMSBG together. The code will not work from other sources.Anyway...without further ado...

Hello my name is Brett Bumeter and I write about Dragon Naturally Speaking at Softduit.com (Tip if you are looking for the details on the coupon codes scroll to the bottom of this article). I wanted to share this video with you showing a fellow blogger named Drew who is using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 for the first time. There are some interesting things that you will see in this video that I wanted to point out to help you get a sense of how Dragon NaturallySpeaking works and how it could potentially work for you.

I think it's important to see Dragon NaturallySpeaking, when people are using it and videos definitely help show you how well the software works these days. It's extremely fast and can help you to type at 150 words per minute. You can see this in the demonstration that Drew has created as he is basically talking at a relatively normal speed. You will notice that he tends to look with his eyes to the right and up just a little bit.

I mention this not because Drew is looking in some strange direction, but instead because Dragon NaturallySpeaking does use your brain in a slightly different way than what you may be used to. You have to think of the words you will say in your head and then speak it out loud. That's a little different than when you think of a composition and type it out with your fingers or even more different than when you attempt to write with your hands using a pen and paper. All three activities use different sections of our brains.

There used to be a time a decade ago when using Dragon NaturallySpeaking was more difficult because it would take a significant amounts of time to train the software. These days, the software can be trained in as little as seven minutes. The out-of- the-box experience with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is flat-out amazing. That said, it will take you a little bit of time to train your brain or compose messages or articles or e-mails by speaking them out loud.
Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Basic with Discount Coupon Code
You can type 150 words a minute using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and that's typically 2 to 3 times faster than your average person can type. 2 to 3 times faster can save you a great deal of time and a great deal of money. This can enable you to spend more time with your family or be more productive at work and get more done and possibly a promotion or raise. Possibly the biggest benefit that you can experience is just staying on top of your workload with less effort.

If you consider also that Drew is looking off to the right a little bit as he's composing, I will share with you a hidden benefit of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. When you use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you are not locked into a position physically, where you have to stare at your computer monitor all of the time. When you don't have the light on your computer screen glaring in your face all the time, you experience a great deal less eye strain. The muscles in your eyes can relax more, as you look around the room and change your focal point. You would be amazed at how much extra energy this will give you as your eyes, and the muscles in your eyes don't get worn out as fast as they would if you sit at a computer and type all day long.

We often associate sore hands and fingers and wrists with typing, but typing also creates very sore eyes and can even lead to migraine headaches. Plus, it basically just makes you tired sitting in front of your computer. Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you can save a great deal of time and effort and keep your energy level high, because you're not wearing out your eyes. With a wireless microphone headset like the one I’m using, you can even pace around your desk or exercise on a treadmill or bike machine while you write your emails!

Best regards,
Brett Bumeter

Blogging Freedom - America Vs. Malaysia

Be thankful live in America where you can blog with freedom. You can blog critically of your government without fear of prison. The recent Presidential election was an example of the power and influence of the new online media, including highly respected and wide read blogs. This was the first Presidential election ever where the majority of people 18-34 got their information from the web.

The internet is a key source of independent news in Malaysia where the government exercises tight control on the mainstream media. Bloggers are now increasingly in the government's sights with several being charged with sedition. One of the most influential bloggers in Malaysia was jailed and just recently released.

The Changing Abode

Since I moved out of my last residence back in the middle of June I have been a vagabond. I have temporarily been staying with friends and family and looking for a place to call my own. Now you may be wondering why it took so long? Well for me it was a very big decision. I have two kids and where I live has a big impact on them as well. At the present time they don't live with me, but I am hopeful that they will be in the near future. Because of this I had to take them into account when it came to size and location.

I looked at a ton of places in many many different municipalities. Well I finally decided on a place last week and put down my deposit. I have never rented before, but given my situation at the moment I have not been looking to buy. Well, I met the owner of the place last night and signed the lease. I now have keys to my brand new place. To say I'm a bit stoked is probably an understatement. It will be so nice to have my own place again. It will be next week before I move in and I am sooo looking forward to it.

The price and the location of this place really can't be beat. The original asking price was quite a bit more than what I am paying so that is a blessing. The location is very close to work and major roadways so I can get places pretty easily. It is also within walking distance for the elementary, middle, junior, and high schools. Now isn't that cool. Congrats to me!

The Power Of Blogging

Monday night around 11:45ish I was sitting watching some TV, blogging, & chatting with friends when suddenly the whole house went black. I had no power. This lasted for about an hour and then everything returned to normal. I was using my laptop but I had my battery removed so when the power shut off so did the computer. I didn't feel like digging around in the office in the dark to find the battery. It could be so many places depending on the mood I was in when I removed it last. Anyway, this little scenario got me thinking about blogging without power.

I would define power as having control of, authority, or influence over others. How does one define the power of a blog? There are various rankings from Technorati, Alexa, Google, and others as well. What do they mean though? What do they represent and do they give a good indication of the power of a blog? Does a blog that had a PR6 in October last year that now has a PR4 have less power? What about if that same blog now has 1000 more RSS subscribers than it did in October? What if the blog's revenue has increase by 30% in the same span? Does the blog have more power due to the increases in subscriptions and revenue? Does it have less now that its PR is lower?

Lets look again at the definition I put forth for power, "having control of, authority, or influence over others." Would you say the Google PR drop or the increases would have a greater impact on power based on my basic definition? I think the answer to this question seems straight forward, but break down the definition into its parts and have a closer look.

Having control of - Does the blog have control of PR? How about subscriptions and revenue. Google holds the power when it comes to PR and how it wants to determine and award it. The blog holds the power when it comes to controlling content, most variables that drive subscriptions, as well as control over generating revenue. Now what if the blog lost a large portion of search traffic from Google because of the PR drop? This in turn reduces traffic, reducing RSS subscriptions, and reducing revenue. Now who holds the power? A blog owner has control over content, marketing, design, revenue generation and more. He or she holds the power for that blog. Google holds the power over PR and where a result ranks for searched keywords. The blogger then has control over how to position the blog so that it is the least dependent on Google or any other single traffic source as possible. In my opinion the blogger ultimately is the one having control of the blog, Google doesn't hold that much power yet...There is nothing wrong with writing for SEO, but remember who you are writing for. Write exclusively for ranking in Google, or any other search engine for that matter, and you give them the power. Write what you want and what people want to read. Write in your own style and with your own personality, and you hold the power over your blog.

Authority - What defines a blog's authority? It certainly isn't Technorati as it is too easily gamed. What makes a blog authoritative? There are many factors that go into authority. Age of the blog is one, quality of content is another, and of course you have traffic and subscription numbers thrown in as well. Another factor is the background of the author. A person who is already well know in certain circles has authority before even putting finger to key. Conversely a person not well known has a much more difficult time as the experience and network aren't already in place. Authority then really comes from a track record of success and actual life experience. For example, a friend of mine Lori of A Cowboy's Wife, wouldn't have much authority if she was single and living in LA or NY with nary a cowboy in sight. She has been successful because she has authority in the area in which her blog is focused.

Influence over others - This is tied closely with authority. The more authority you have or are perceived to have the more influence you will have over others. Influence is also determined by the style and quality of writing. Just as there are more dynamic and influential speakers, there are more dynamic and influential writers and bloggers. You can have authority on your topic yet not be the most influential. You can be influential without having as much authority as the next guy. Stephen Hawking is one of the most recognizable faces of science and physics specifically and in the eyes of many still today has a large amount of authority. Yet it can be argued that he has not had the greatest actual influence on the physics community over the last 35 years. His authority comes from his visibility and his influence is greater in the lay world than in the physics world. His books and speaking engagements and even to a point his struggle through his disability all contribute to his authority.

Bottom line is that an author holds the control over the content of the blog. The authority for the blog and author comes from a track record of success, actual life experience, and visibility. Influence really comes down to the perceptions people have. The better they perceive you the more weight they give to your opinions - authority - and the more they will allow those opinions to shape their own - influence.

How do you define the power of a blog? What do you think defines a blog's authority? How about influence? How closely do you think authority and influence are tied?
