Where Preparation And Opportunity Meet

I always hear people that aren’t successful saying about those that are, “they are just lucky.” Successful people aren’t just “lucky.” They were prepared and in the right mindset when opportunity presented itself. By associating with and befriending successful people you can learn how to be prepared when your opportunity comes.

I have found this relationship to be very true. Not just in the online world but offline as well. Find people that are more successful than you and befriend them. Find out what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. Success rubs off. Knowledge and experience can be gleaned from those you associate with and in doing so many mistakes can be avoided.

Milton Berle said that, "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." Learning, seeking, taking risks, these are all about creating opportunity and getting yourself prepared. Nate over at Nate Whitehill dot Com recently posted an article on how having the right friends can make all the difference. In the article he talks about his experiences regarding his circle of friends and his personal success. When he went from selecting friends that were "fun to hang out with" and started "surrounding myself with like-minded and similarly focused people" he found that he was "able to make incredible progress, both personally and ...[in] our businesses." Choosing friends and associates in a proper manner is all about preparing yourself for opportunity.

I have seen people with tons of potential and countless opportunities waste it all because of poor decisions in picking their relationships. I have watched as person very close to me destroyed our relationship for a fleeting moment of fun with new friends. I have seen the hurt in her eyes, heard the regret in her voice, as she wished that time could be reversed and different roads traveled. Unfortunately the past cannot be undone, but mistakes in it can be learned from. I agree with what Nate said in his article that "it is easy to get caught up in a highly social and non-productive lifestyle." I would encourage you to examine your relationships and choices and ask yourself if they are beneficial and constructive. Do they make you a better person?

Find people that encourage you, make you better, and inspire you to be great. Seek out people of like mind, with similar ideals and goals. Develop relationships with people of high moral character that have lofty goals. Find risk-takers, not reckless, as you will find that taking more calculated risks, and through focused action "luck," that intersection of preparation and opportunity, will find you.

Do you have experiences like this in your own life? Have you had a friend who inspired you? A harmful relationship you had to leave behind? How have preparation and opportunity intersected in your life? Leave a comment and discuss it for the benefit of all.

Hits4Pay Program Review

I have been using Hits4Pay for about a 2 weeks now and have accumulated a bit over 100$. The payout threshold is 25$ so I should be receiving payment in July. Hits4Pay is similar to some of the other paid email programs I participate in like InboxDollars and Sendearnings. Hits4Pay doesn't have all of the cash offers, games, and surveys like the others though. Right now the plan is to use the bulk of my earnings from Hits4Pay as additional funds for my advertising budget. If you click on my Featured Sites button in my navigation menu above you will see some other programs that I use for the same purpose.

They are offering $10 free to those that sign up and I have been receiving about 15 paid emails a day from Hits4Pay paying $.02 per email. You can see that without any referrals it would take just under 2 months to reach the threshold for payment. This isn't bad considering you don't have to sign up for any offers, take any surveys, and viewing the emails is very easily done while doing other online tasks.

Hits4Pay has been operating online since 1998. The business structure is one where advertisers pay them to reach a particular audience and the revenue from that paid advertising plus income from any affiliate programs is then shared with the members.

I would rate Hits4Pay 8 out 10. It is free to sign up and comes with 10$ free to start you on your way. The earnings potential without referrals is a bit lower than other similar programs, but you also don't have to complete any offers. On the productivity side it is very easy to view the ads while doing other online activities. I recommend this program to my readers as an easy way to earn some money to pad that advertising budget or to simply make a little extra spending money.

UPDATE: Thanks for reading, check out my latest Hits4Pay update Maximize Your Hits4Pay Earnings in 5 Easy Steps.

PayPerPost Program Review

After seeing many sites with the PayPerPost banners and sponsored posts I decided to check it out and see for myself what all the fuss was about. I joined several weeks ago and have completed several offers, of which this is one, and have found it to be a very good program and an easy way to earn extra income from your blog. One of my keys to profitable productive blogging is to develop multiple income streams and PayPerPost is one such "stream" that is very profitable and doesn't take a ton of time so that you can maintain a high level of productivity.

For advertisers PayPerPost is a way for them to tap in to a community of over 28,000 bloggers and reach millions of readers every month. With PayPerPost's blog rating and "postie" ratings an advertiser can target their advertisement to certain criteria and level of blog. When an advertiser posts an opportunity the "posties" from PayPerPost will review, promote and market products, services and websites on behalf of the advertiser.Advertisers range from Fortune 500 companies down to small advertisers and everything in between. PayPerPost is the ultimate word of mouth advertising venue in the world.

For you bloggers PayPerPost is a program that allows you to make money blogging while writing about products, services, websites and companies and earn cash for your advertisement, opinions, and reviews. Many of us in the blogging community are/were already doing this and PayPerPost is a way to take what you already love doing, blogging, and make it more profitable and productive for you. PayPerPost allows advertisers to rate "posties" work and also rates the "posties" blog traffic using rankings from google and alexa.
PayPerPost encourages people to be open and honest with their postings.

It's up to you to pick the Opportunities that best suit you and your blog. If it doesn't feel right, if you don't own the product, or if you can't be honest we ask you to pass on the Opportunity. Dishonest or completely off-topic posts can ultimately hurt your blog's credibility. We strongly encourage you to only take opportunities that relate to you and to alert us if an advertiser ever suggests that you be dishonest.

PayPerPost has a very good Code Of Ethics policy for their "posties" that is summed up in two statements.

  1. Be Honest with Yourself and Your Readers
  2. Disclosure is Required

Another thing I really like about the PayPerPost program is that they allow you to divert some of your earnings to a charity. One of the options is one of my favorite charities Habitat For Humanity. Giving to others is a big part of my philosophy and is something I do with a tithe of all donations to this site. The charity I donate to is Compassion Services International.

As a resource for profitable productive blogging I have made PayPerPost my site of the week and I rate PayPerPost a 10, and recommend it to all of my readers.

Improve Blog Orginization And Increase Traffic By Editing the Post Time and Date in Blogger

Okay I was asked this question and figured that I would post the answer here as I have noticed this same questions other places as well.

Changing the time and date of a post is very beneficial in blog organization. By backdating certain posts so that they don't go to your main page in conjunction with the post's "permalink" is a great way to add content to your site like thank you posts for subscriptions, donations, etc. or to create traffic funnels or a series of articles without having all of them clutter the main page.

It is also a great way to give new life to an old post. I know there have been times when I have gone back over my posts and realized that I had learned a lot since the original post and it needed updating. After updating the post edit the time and date to be current and it will reappear on your main page. I have seen this really make a difference in traffic to an article.

Well enough with the introduction

Step 1

Go to your Posting Tab and either Create a new post or Edit an existing post. Once you have the post opened you should see a screen like this.

Step 2
Click on the Post Options link circled in the picture. This will open a drop down and you will see where you can edit the Post time and date.

Once you have changed the time and date to what you want click on the publish post button. And you are done.

Cman's Agloco Update & Viewbar Review

Well Agloco is finally live and after a few glitches at the start seems to working well. Read a description of what Agloco is and my inital impression and review of Agloco here. Considering they just went live on June 8th I think things are going smoothly. I have been using my viewbar and have hit my max hours for the month. I have noticed that my referals are not surfing quite as much as I am so far. They have initiated the auto-upgrades for the viewbar and it seems to be going well. My viewbar is updated and showing ads and is working great. The upgraded bar integrates well with both Firefox and the new IE. I haven't noticed any slowdown in surfing due to the bar which is nice. I do wish that the ads were a little more relevant to my interests or my surfing habits.

Here is what is what Brian Greenwald from Agloco is saying they are working on to improve Agloco and our earnings.

The next phase for AGLOCO is the maximizing of Viewbar revenue. This is an important goal, as we have fairly fixed costs so the more revenue we generate (especially more revenue per Viewbar), the more each Member will receive. There are lots of steps that will need to be taken in the coming months to improve AGLOCO’s revenue including:

  1. Improving our search and ad revenue sources and sharing agreements. As more Members use the Viewbar, our bargaining power grows.
  2. Start the Viewbar targeting system. One part of this system will focus ads based on your searches and surfing. Another part of this system will focus ads based on where you live (of course, AGLOCO will need to have a contract with ad networks in each of these countries to provide local ads in local countries).
  3. Better inform Members of the revenue generating opportunities on the Viewbar.
  4. Continue to work with existing Members who have not yet activated their Viewbars. We expect that after the initial spike of downloads this process will be one of gradual adoption. New Members signing up will have access to the Viewbar right away.
  5. Continue to make improvements to encourage continued viral growth of the AGLOCO Membership. This includes website improvements, increased Viewbar functionality, and an opt-in Member-to-Member communication system.
Sounds exciting and I am looking forward to more great things from Agloco. If you haven't yet signed up for Agloco, I highly recommend getting in now while it is still a virtual ground floor opportunity. Here's to our combined success.

Traffic Building Experiment - Ted Kosmatka

A really good friend of mine Ted Kosmatka is a science fiction author. He has been very successful the last year and is really building momentum in the writing industry. He has had several short stories published in Asimov's Science Fiction and has another one coming out in the September issue coming out around the end of July or first of August. He also has 2 other stories that have been picked up for publication and will be available in the coming months.

I decided to do a little experiment to help him build more traffic coming up to the release of his story, The Prophet of Flores, in the upcoming Asimov's. I have added his tag to my ViralTags matrix as the first step. I also would like for many of you to add a link to his site using this link Ted Kosmatka.

If anyone deserves to make a living doing what they love Ted does. Let us all get together and give him a bit of a boost in his drive to turn his passion for writing into a lifelong career. I know if you visit his site and read his stuff you will not be disappointed. Thank you all for your participation and I will be posting updates on the experiment here to let you all know how it is going.

LinkBidr - Are You One Of The Ten ?

Well the buzz keeps building on LinkBidr. Not real sure yet exactly what it is or how it will work. Let me know what your ideas are about it.

I came across this LinkBidr site and it seems pretty interesting. I went ahead and signed up since they are giving 10$ for free, on the launch day of 06/25/07, to the first 100 people that sign up. The last time I checked only 29 spots were left. Here is their description of what they are.

Linkbidr allows you to promote anything on the web at theprice you set - never pay for impressions or clicks again.

This seems like it could be a nice alternative to keyword advertising. Well I guess we will all find out on 06/25/07. I doubt it lives up to the hype though; seems like things never do.

What are your thoughts on what this is and how it is going to work? Leave a comment.

Viral Tags - Round 2

After a lot of consideration and conversations with some other bloggers I decided to give viraltags one more go. The first round of viraltags was somewhat successful as my Technorati ranking increased quite a bit, as did my alexa ranking. I found that one of the major benefits to me from all of this has been the discovery of many new and interesting blogs I would have never found. Thanks to all of you who participated in the first matrix and to all of you who will in this one. After this matrix is full that's it. GET IN WHILE YOU CAN!

1.) Copy and paste(for those of you using blogger post in the compose tab, not the edit html tab, of your post editor) the matrix of “ViralTags” below.

2.) Substitute the Host Tag and one of the “Viral Tags” in the matrix with your anchor text of choice with your blog’s URL. Please keep anchor text to a max of 3 words to keep the matrix size manageable.

3.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their “Viral Tags”, practice good karma by copying his/her Host Tag’s anchor text (automatically the associated link will also be copied) and paste it over one of your “Viral Tags” below.

Changing Your Site's Thumbnail Image In Technorati

UPDATE: Okay here is the New Post on how to

Update your Site's Thumbnail Image in Technorati

UPDATE: Technorati is changing the way the thumbnail images on the site are done. They will no longer be using the Alexa images. This method with still obviously work to change your Alexa thumbnail though. Stay tuned for an updated post with the new Technorati thumbnail information.

After browsing around technorati and visiting many sites, I noticed that quite a few were drastically different from the thumbnail image shown at technorati. I knew that my thumbnail was outdated and it bothered me a bit every time I saw it. So I decided to figure out why this was occuring and how to change it. Now this may seem like a small detail to you, but I do feel it can make an impact on traffic. If this was a problem for you and my fix below helps you out let me know.

Well here is what I found.

I have been trying to boost my Alexa ranking and so have been visiting Alexa on a regular basis lately. I noticed that the site image that was on Alexa was the same as that on Technorati. I updated the thumbnail at Alexa and it updated the thumbnail at Technorati. Apparently Technorati uses the site thumbnails from Alexa. Here is the link for where to update your thumbnail at Alexa.

Do this for each site you add. Once your site is verfied click on the link that says Manage http://www.yoursiteurl.com. This will bring up the summary page for the url selected. Click on the Diagnostic tab. This will bring up your diagnostic tools. At the bottom of the left menu you will see a link for Enhanced Image Search. Follow this link to bring up your Enhanced Image Search options. Select that you would like ot enable enhanced image search and click ok. There you go now your site is set for Enhanced Image Search.

Ten Secrets of Writing Reviews That Keep Readers Coming Back

... reviews make great blog posts. We mustn't forget though, that for bloggers, reviews aren't only a novel answer to the perpetual conundrum of “what shall I write about today?” but also a cool way to attract readers. Lots of people want to know if the new U2 record (for example) is any good, so why not write to cater for an audience that’s already there?

Cman's Review of the Online Opportunity Blog

I stumbled upon Jay's blog Online Opportunity, which is a blog about make money online, quite a while back and it was an instant favorite of mine. Since I am always looking for opportunities to make money online this site has been very helpful. I noticed several weeks ago that he was running a 100$ contest for the best review, see the post and rules here, and was planning on writing this review several days ago. I have been extremely busy and just hadn't got to it yet.

Today I was over at a B Money Savvy, a site ran by a friend of mine(i figured a plug for you was in order Lori) and noticed she had beat me to it and written a review of Jay's site. Well that combined with the looming deadline prompted me to finally give you, my readers, the review and take advantage of Jay's contest offer. Thanks Jay and here is your review!

Jay, like many of us, has noticed the fact that many online opportunities require a certain amount of money up front for it and then more often than not just don't deliver on their "promises" or provide much return on the investment. Well this is where Jay's blog comes in. Here, in his own words, is his commitment to helping people.

This site, then, is dedicated to the idea that making money online doesn't have to be expensive. But it also requires some work. And for those of you looking for the next silver bullet, I’ll review the opportunities that would have appealed to me when I first started, and let you know which ones look good, and which ones look like scams.

I’ll spend the money and take the risk, so you don’t have to.

My hope is that by steering you in the direction of opportunities that have a better chance of working for you, you won’t get discouraged like so many people who get lured in by hype and then fail at programs. Keep working at it, and you can get what you’re looking for.

I believe Jay to be sincere and honest in this commitment. This commitment is reflected in how his site is ran and in it's design and layout.

1. One of the first things I noticed when I first visited his site is the almost complete absence of monetization. This to me sent a clear message that he was about informing people first and making money off the blog second. While he surely makes money off affiliate links in reviews even these are very unobtrusive in nature.

2. The second thing I noticed was that he has recent readers and top commentators sections in his far right column. He is building a community of like minded individuals and isn't afraid to send some support back to his supporters.

3. The site is well organized with recent posts, top posts, and category links. It is easy to navigate and locate information that you are looking for. Many times I will simply pick a category and just read all the posts and soak up all the information.

Okay and now one small thing I noticed of which I am critical. I am using IE7 and, for me at least, the mag glass graphic in the site search block doesn't quite line up with the search term field.

Well there it is folks. I hope this has given you an idea of what to expect when you visit his site. Once again thanks to Jay for the great site and this contest opportunity.

AdBrite - You Can't Lose! - Maximize Your Earnings!

I have been using AdBrite for quite some time now and really like their program. They offer inline ads, contextual ads, and active interstitials. AdBrite has been a very successful program for me both as a publisher and as an advertiser.

Now AdBrite has begun something that, to my knowledge, is unprecedented in the contextual ad marketplace. They are offering to beat your earnings with other ad publishers or if they can't they will run the other ads for you. I have tried this out and have been very happy. I can place one ad block and know that the ads running in it are earning my the maximum amount possible.

You can run ads from your current ad networks within your AdBrite code, and they will always show the ads that earn you the most money. In other words, when they can earn you the most, they will show our ads. When they can't, they will rotate your other ads back in. You can't lose.

I have tried this with Bidvertiser and yahoo so far with good success. If you haven't signed up with AdBrite yet I highly recommend them.

Cman's Top 5 Tips for Building a Profitable Blog

1. CONTENT is king. Regularly update the site with posts, links to relevant content, and rss feeds relating to the niche. This will give people a reason to return and help create a sustainable traffic level.

2. Visit other blogs related to yours and post comments with links back to your site. Contact the author and let them know you are linking to their site and ask for them to return the favor. Do this early and often as this will help drive traffic to your site and up your standing in the search engines. Post meaningful comments don't SPAM.

3. After a while static advertisements become "invisible" to regular readers so diversify not only your sites but your advertising. Obviously use adsense but also try BidVertiser. and ElementAds they are really good programs with lower minimum payouts(10$) and they both use paypal. Another one to try would be AdBrite. I also recommend Obeus.com - The Democratic Ads System. With Obeus.com you will need to register with E-Gold as that is the prefered payment system. E-Gold is a great system and i have been using it for years. Another great site is AuctionAds. They have great ads based on ebay auctions and the commission is very high.

4. Visit forums related to adsense type programs, blogging, making money, entrepreneurship, small business, etc., and any related to the topic of your niche and post to them. Don't just post crap as this will work against you. Post honest thoughtful comments and information. Register for these forums and put links to your sites in your signature and when appropriate and, if allowed, your posts. Don't SPAM

5. Remain dedicated. It will take a lot of work in the beginning and throughout. Building a high traffic blog is a long term endeavor. Set aside a set amount of time each day to devote to your effort.

EBay slashes Google ads, escalating rift

EBay Inc. has pulled all of its advertising from Google Inc.'s U.S. network in what is widely seen as punishment for trying to crash eBay's user conference in Boston this week. The move exposes the widening rift between eBay and Google, as they increasingly compete on new products, making a public showdown inevitable, according to analysts.

Boca Java - Great Father's Day Gift Idea

Update: Check out my latest post on using affiliate marketing and product "buzz" to make money online Boca Java, Rush Limbaugh And Affiliate Marketing.

This is a bit off topic but I thought I would share it anyway. I heard an advertisement for Boca Java on the Rush Limbaugh show and, since I love coffee, thought I would give it a try. I ordered their sampler and was very happy. The coffee is probably some of the best coffee I have had. The Surfing Safari flavor was just phenomenal. If your dad loves coffee then check out Boca Java as a unique father's day gift. Or if you love coffee check them out for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Boca Java, Rush Limbaugh And Affiliate Marketing

Okay here is the question what do Rush Limbaugh, Boca Java, affiliate marketing, and this blog have in common? On the surface nothing but let's examine it a bit more closely.

Rush Limbaugh

Regardless of whether you agree with his politics you have to admit products he endorses or advertises on his show are wildly successful. Scale? Think Oprah's Book Club and book sales. Probably his impact is bigger. I would have to say that Rush pretty much single handedly put Snapple on the national scene.

Boca Java

One of the latest products to be endorsed and advertise on the Rush Limbaugh show and my favorite coffee. The coffee is roasted to order and arrives as fresh as coffee can be. The aroma when you open the box is wonderful, and when you grind those beans and brew your fist cup you will see why I love it so much and why Boca Java is also Rush Limbaugh's favorite coffee.

Affiliate Marketing With Boca Java

Boca Java in conjunction with it's Rush advertising campaign has recently launched an affiliate marketing campaign as well. The buzz surrounding the product combined with a great affiliate program that includes high commissions and oft times really great performance incentives that can really add to your bottom line. The buzz is great. The product is great, and the affiliate program itself is great.

Profitable Productive Blogging and Boca Java

Taking advantage of a hot product with a huge amount of buzz behind it and capitalizing on it is a great affiliate marketing strategy and an easy way to make more money blogging. This would be productive use of advertising space and certainly profitable.

Now I actually ordered Boca Java gourmet coffee because I heard the ad on Rush, love coffee and decided to give it a try. I loved it! I recommended it to friends and family and several of them tried it and loved it as well. The freshness and flavor of the coffee is phenomenal. This was all done before Boca Java started the affiliate program. I was already "marketing" this product to friends and family by telling them about this great coffee, now with the affiliate program I can earn commission on the sales I am generating.

Taking advantage of opportunities like this can be very beneficial for you as a blogger and affiliate marketer. Utilizing your advertising space to market hot products and taking advantage of buzz that is being generated elsewhere is great way to boost earnings. Be prepared to take advantage of opportunities like this to maximize your affiliate marketing income.

AGLOCO Viewbar Finally Here!

I recently joined AGLOCO because of a friend recommended it to me. I am now promoting it to you because I like the idea and I want you to share in what I think will be an exciting new Internet concept.

AGLOCO’s story is simple:

Do you realize how valuable you are? Advertisers, search providers and online retailers are paying billions to reach you while you surf. How much of that money are you making? NONE!

AGLOCO thinks you deserve a piece of the action.

AGLOCO collects money from those companies on behalf of its members. (For example, Google currently pays AOL 10 cents for every Google search by an AOL user. And Google still has enough profit to pay $1.6 billion dollars for YouTube, an 18-month old site full of content that YouTube’s users did not get paid for!

AGLOCO will work to get its Members their share of this and more.

AGLOCO is building a new form of online community that they call an Economic Network. They are not only paying Members their fair share, but they’re building a community that will generate the kind of fortune that YouTube made. But instead of that wealth making only a few people rich, the entire community will get its share.

What's the catch? No catch - no spyware, no pop-ups and no spam - membership and software are free and AGLOCO is 100% member owned. Privacy is a core value and AGLOCO never sells or rents member information.

So do both of us a favor: Sign up for AGLOCO right now! If you use this link to sign up, I automatically get credit for referring you and helping to build AGLOCO.

Transparent Backgrounds Of Your Page Or Columns In Blogger

I have many times been asked about changing the background of the main page to an image, and also about how to make the content columns transparent so that the background will show through. So here is your answer. You can also use this technique to change the background of just one content column if you prefer. Just follow step two for the content column(sidebar left/right etc)you are wanting to add the background to instead of the main wrapper.

PART 1 - Changing background for whole page
find this code, or similar, in your template
body {
background: $bgColor;
margin: 0;
padding: 0px;
font: x-small Verdana, Arial;
text-align: center;
color: $textColor;
font-size/* */:/**/small;
font-size: /**/small;
}

and replace the
$bgColor;

with
url("http://www."url_of_your_image".com);
PART 2 - Changing background of specific content column

If you are only wanting to change the background of your main column find this code in your template
#main-wrapper {
width: 484px;
margin: 15px;
float: left;
background-color: $mainBgColor;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}

and either add
background: url("http://www."url_of_your_image".com);
or edit as in first example. The procedure for changing the background of your sidebar left/right wrappers is the same except you need to find these blocks of code, or similar.
.sidebar-wrapper-left {
width: 165px;
float: left;
background-color: $mainBgColor;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}
.sidebar-wrapper-right {
width: 275px;
float: left;
background-color: $mainBgColor;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}
PART 3 - Transparent Backgrounds

If you want your your main content and sidebars to be transparent so that the page background shows through change the main page background as described in the the first part of this post and then change
background-color: $mainBgColor;
to
background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0);
for your content wrapper, main wrapper and sidebar left/right wrappers.
